AnimaNaturalis expose the horror of the cruel traditions with animals in Catalonia

The strong season of shows with bulls in Catalonia has begun in Terres de l'Ebre. More than 450 shows are expected to be held until the end of the year, of which a hundred will be filled with fire.

The team of researchers from AnimaNaturalis and CAS International have resumed the recording of the cruel celebrations with bulls in Catalonia, especially of roped and fired bulls. These are the two modalities that we has urged to be prohibited in the Parliament of Catalonia through a Bill promoted by the CUP and En Comú Podem. Just today the deadline to present amendments to the whole ends and no party has presented any.

AnimaNaturalis has returned to the catalonian bullrings that have concentrated the most embolized bulls so far, such as L'Ampolla, last weekend, and Lligallo del Gánguil and Sant Jaume d'Enveja this weekend. They have managed to obtain images that are very difficult to access, because the cameramen are often reprimanded and their work is made difficult when it comes to obtaining images.

Aïda Gascón, director of AnimaNaturalis denounces that the emboladas (fire bulls) are often complicated: “Both in Sant Jaume d'Enveja and in L'Ampolla some of the bulls wrapped themselves in the rope and suffered strong falls and jerks”. She says that another suffered once when he turned around one of the fireballs, being just in direct contact with his back. “In the case of the Lligallo del Gánguil, the bull broke part of the structure of a wooden tower, and the planks fell on him. In addition, a participant threw a shirt at the fireballs, which hung from the horns for a long time, with the danger that this entails".

From AnimaNaturalis we will denounce that in the Lligallo del Gánguil pyrotechnics, firecrackers and rockets were used, when the oxen were inside the square inside the box.

"There should be no debate about the continuity of these modalities of festivals with bulls, the roped and fired fulls or the bulls thrown into the sea," explains Gascón. "We trust that all the groups in the Parliament will support the bill that has been registered for its prohibition and that they stop thinking about a handful of votes to secure some mayoralties and focus on the general sense of all of Catalonia. The majority of the population rejects these shows, including many people from Terres de l'Ebre", she adds.

AnimaNaturalis and CAS International act to publicize a reality that is still largely unknown by the majority of the Catalan population. In addition, both entities work to quantify the cost of these festivals, in the 30 municipalities where they are celebrated. In the case of Catalonia, they denounce that 850,000 euros are allocated from the municipalities and that is why the vast majority of these shows are free.
